Types of penalties
Not all penalties are the same
The treatment depends on the diagnosis. Identifying the type of penalty is the first step towards recovery.
Manual
Human actionA human Google reviewer has detected a violation of the guidelines. You receive a direct notification in Search Console with the specific type of infraction. It requires a documented reconsideration request demonstrating the corrective actions taken. Google's average response time is 2-4 weeks after submission.
- Unnatural links (inbound or outbound)
- Automatically generated content
- Thin content / duplicate content
- Cloaking or sneaky redirects
- User-generated spam
- Manual actions for pure spam
Algorithmic
Automatic detectionThere is no notification. A Google algorithm detects suspicious patterns and automatically lowers your visibility. Recovery depends on the next update of the affected algorithm, which can take between 3 and 6 months. We use Wayback Machine to correlate changes on your site with the exact dates of each update.
- Google Panda (thin, duplicate or low-quality content)
- Google Penguin (manipulative links, over-optimized anchor text)
- Core Updates (loss of relevance, E-E-A-T deficiencies)
- Helpful Content Update (content created for search engines, not users)
- Spam Update (unsupervised AI content patterns)
- Page Experience / Core Web Vitals (technical performance)
Diagnosis
Before curing, we diagnose with precision
Without an accurate diagnosis there is no possible recovery. Each step reveals a piece of the puzzle.
Search Console Analysis
We review manual actions, index coverage, crawl errors and search performance. We correlate traffic drops with exact dates of Google Updates (Panda, Penguin, Core Updates, Helpful Content) to identify which algorithm has acted.
Backlink Audit
Exhaustive analysis with Ahrefs and Semrush of your link profile: toxic domains, over-optimized anchor text, abnormal dofollow/nofollow ratio, shared IP patterns and risky links. We prepare the disavow file with the domains to be disauthorized with Google.
Content Review
Detection of duplicate content (similarity analysis with Ahrefs), thin content, keyword stuffing and unsupervised AI-generated content patterns. We evaluate E-E-A-T signals: authorship, demonstrable experience, source citations and credibility. We use Wayback Machine to identify when problematic changes were introduced.
Root Cause Identification
We cross-reference all data to determine the exact cause. Precise temporal correlation between traffic drops and Google Updates, link pattern analysis with Disavow Tool, and site change review via Wayback Machine. The diagnosis defines whether recovery will be quick (manual: 2-4 weeks) or progressive (algorithmic: 3-6 months).
Recovery process
From penalty to recovery
A meticulous process where each phase has a clear and measurable objective.
Identify
Complete diagnosis: type of penalty (Panda, Penguin, Core Update, Helpful Content), root cause, extent of damage and affected URLs. Temporal correlation with Wayback Machine and update dates. Without an accurate diagnosis there is no possible recovery.
Clean
Execution of the cleanup plan: submission of the disavow file to Google Disavow Tool to disauthorize toxic links, removal or rewriting of thin/duplicate/AI-generated content, correction of technical issues and resolution of every detected violation. Content similarity analysis with Ahrefs to detect internal and external duplicates.
Request review
For manual penalties: preparation and submission of the documented reconsideration request (typical response in 2-4 weeks). For algorithmic: site reoptimization for the next update of the affected algorithm (typical recovery in 3-6 months). We document every action with evidence.
Monitor
Daily recovery tracking: rankings, traffic, indexation and risk signals. We verify that E-E-A-T signals are progressively strengthened. We iterate until full recovery and set up permanent alerts so it never happens again.
